McLEAN, Va. — Federal prosecutors in Virginia say they have shut down one of the world’s largest Internet file-sharing sites, Megaupload.com, and charged its founder and others with violating piracy laws.
An indictment accuses the company of costing copyright holders more than $500 million in lost revenue from pirated films and other content. The indictment was unsealed Thursday, one day after Web sites shut down in protest of two Congressional proposals intended to thwart the online piracy of copyrighted movies and TV programs.
Megaupload.com has claimed it is diligent in responding to complaints about pirated material.
The indictment says that at one point, Megaupload was the 13th most popular Web site in the world.
So, basically Megauploaded is being sued for the exact reason 98% of AintShetFolk on the internet use it. I can't say they didn't see this coming. They did. I can't honestly say they don't deserve this. They do. But damn, this is going to send downloaders around the world into a fileserve, mediafire, rapidshare freezy. I know uplink is somewhere smiling in full delight over the traffic spike they're about to see.
I know some of you all are reading this and wondering why we care. Well, from a HipHop stand point, the question of "Does Swizz Beatz know about this" comes to mind. For those of you who don't know, Swizz Beatz is the CEO of Megaupload which was announced YESTERDAY on blogs all across the world. Now Megaupload is shut down. What a coincidence.
