Twan's Top 10 - #2 Big K.R.I.T. "Wuz Here"

Phenom but me on to this one. I had heard of Big K.R.I.T but had never really listened to a lot of the music. Man, when I played this tape, it DID NOT come out of rotation for a long time. It has everything you want in a hip hop album. Dope lyrics, banging beats, storytelling, and depth of emotion. K.R.I.T. lets people in to his mind and soul and you come out rewarded for it. K.R.I.T. is breathing new breath into the southern music scene.

Twan's Top 10 - #3 G.O.O.D. Friday Releases

Now I know this isn't a mixtape per se. However, you can't ignore the music they Kanye and his G.O.O.D. Music label dropped this fall. If you put the 14 tracks together, you get a collection of great music. Everyone from the G.O.O.D. family is represented. The line up that Kanye has put together is diverse and very talented. And these songs show it.

Twanstradomus Top 10 - #4 The Freedom Suite LP

There is SOOOOO much good music coming out of North Carolina. And this group is no exception. The Beast consists of Pierce Freelon on the mic, Stephen Coffman on the drums, Eric Hirsh on the keys, and Peter Kimosh on the bass. For this album, Freelon called his mom, Grammy nominated vocalist Nneena Freelon to help out. They blend jazz and hip hop seamlessly. Sometimes groups that try to combine two genres come off as missing something. The Beast dodged this hurdle by providing the listener with good music, first and foremost. The album has help from Rapsody, Thee Tom Hardy, Kooley High, King Mez, and Phonte. It also contains spoken word segments from Herbie Hancock and ?uestlove, among others, who talk about issues of jazz artists acceptance of hip hop to issues in the LBGT community. If you want some good music, listen to this album. Here's a taste of what they offer.

BigTwan's Top 10 - #5 J. Cole "Friday Night Lights"

What more can be said about J. Cole? When this mixtape dropped, it literally shut down his site with the amount of traffic it received. One of the flagship artists under Roc Nation, J. Cole is one of the hottest up and coming emcees in the game. And he does not disappoint with "Friday Night Lights". This mixtape shows a more well rounded J. Cole. From letting the world know that he's on the cusp in "Blow Up" to talking about the duality of man in 2face. "Ink from the pen spilling on the my notebook/Filled with dreams, this is my hope book" It is my hope that the hip-hop world takes heed of this emcee. Cuz he has something to say.

BigTwan's Top 10 #6 Pac Div "Don't Mention It"

Pac Div is one of the young groups out that keep delivering on a consistent basis. I didn't think they could keep it up after Church League Champions. Man was I wrong. They pick up right where they left of with Don't Mention It. It's good to see that there are people who can strike a balance between beats that will bust your speakers and dope lyricism. Listening to this tape makes a country dude from VA feel like he was from Cali. Some of the standout tracks are "Don't Mention It" "Shine" and "Waves at the Prom"

Twan's Top 10 - #7 Joe Budden Mood Muzik 4

Who says storytelling is dead in hip hop? Joe Budden shows that a emcee can show emotion and not have to seem "soft". As with others in the series, Joe again brings the listener into his life so we can see situations thru his eyes. This can be seen on songs Like "Welcome to Real Life" and "Role Reversal". With features from Styles P, Pusha T, Royce, Crooked I, Lloyd Banks and Fabolous nobody drops the ball. Mood Muzik 4 does not disappoint.

Twan's Top 10 - #8 Add-2 Tale of Two's City Vol 4: Better Days

Add-2's a Tale of Two's City series is always on point. He doesn't disappoint with Vol 4. He balances storytelling with battle rhymes well on the tape. He goes from subjects like killing emcees in the game to talking bout that old feeling that hip hop is losing with ease. Some of the standout tracks on the tape were "DGK" and "Waiting So Long" and "The Feeling is Gone". No only a great emcee, Add-2 is a cool dude. Thee Tom Hardy: Secret of the Green Magic                                       Rapsody: Return of the B-Girl                  

I have both of these mixtapes at my #9 spot. It was hard to put one of these mixtapes higher than the others and I couldn't leave either one off. These two artists are my top new artists of the year. Since they under 9th Wonder's label, we know the production on both joints are tight. Its the lyricism that sets these two artist apart from the pack. Its a crime if you haven't copped them yet. Like they say in the song together "We'll be your favorities" Its a Wonderful World yall!

Phenom Wyte's Top 10 Mixtapes of 2010

Now Big Simba aka Phenom Blak did his top ten soul and rap albums of 2010. I happen to agree with him on those two lists. When it comes to mixtapes, I have a slight different opinion. On our podcast (look for the tab on top if this is foreign to you. Enjoy!) I said that I would come up with my own mixtape list. Now my list includes anything that was free (so mixtapes, free lp and ep) So here it is. From Phenom Wyte to you.

My number ten mixtape is from the group Tomorrow Yesterday titled To...From... (The Ladies Album). As the title suggests, this is a gift from the group to the ladies. Now this isn't what you general think of as a ode to the ladies with a bunch of dudes talking bout how good they are in the sack or how all the ladies can't resist them. With songs like "Treat Her Right" and "She It" the group takes a more adult approach. Production is great with samples from classic songs like "Ladies Night" and "Love of my Life" by Michael Jackson. So grab your girl and relax to the good music.

Top 10 of 2010 [Rap Edition]: #1 1982 (Statik Selektah & Termanology) " 1982 "

So the #1 rap album of 2010 encompasses everything that IS  Hip Hop.  There's a 5 minute intro of nothing be flow and bars.  There's over the top scratching on over the top production with over the top lyrics with an over the top delivery.  The flow of the album constantly changes paces and keeps the listeners interested the whole time.  The some songs have messages with directly stated and indirectly made through a joking matter.  The album has dark songs, happy songs, street hop, real tracks, and personal tracks.  There isn't one album out that does every thing this album does in 16 tracks.  Ever tracks is at least a 4.5/5 on just about ever level and the features only add substance to songs.  When you bring Xzibit back and it could be argued that he has the best verse on a song with Cassidy and Termanology, you've got something classic going on in your studio!

Top 20 of 2010 [Mixtape Edition]: #1 Big K.R.I.T. " Wuz Here "

Why is this a mixtape.  K.R.I.T, why is this a mixtape.  I wanted this to be my #3 or #2 Top 10 Rap album of 2010 but it can't because it's not a rap album.  Mr. King Remembered in Time came out of nowhere-- yea I'm not from Mississippi -- and burst on the seen with album full of deep lyrical content about his life and a production team of basically 1, K.R.I.T himself.  He's probably one of the best freshmen class rappers in an age where it's becoming normal practice to write your own lyrics and produce your own tracks.  There's no reason to name ever song I like, because from Country Sh*t to Voices, I love em all.  The song that caught me attention however was Children of the World.  K.R.I.T will live up to the meaning behind his name, and I'll be listening the whole time.

Top 10 of 2010 [Soul Edition]:#1 Janelle Monae " The ArchAndroid "

If I took the time to express to the world WHY this is the #1 album of 2010 and may actually be a top 10 soul album of decade, we'd be here all muh-fuggin day. Janelle Monae constantly proves time and time again that her influences grew her talents to such a level of expression that listening to her actually pulls you back decades. Before you know is you're hearing Michael Jackson, Prince, James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Wonder, etc. Then the album end just as fast is it begin with tracks like Faster. Her interludes are some of the most beautiful displays of orchestral sampling in hip hop. Songs like Neon Valley Street are like no other's I've heard in a very long time. The album is a masterpiece.

Top 10 of 2010 [Rap Edition]:#2 Kanye West " My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy "

I know I'mma catch hell for this, but I don't care. Kanye does deserve the #1 spot on some of your lists, but that's just because you don't have my tastes. Kanye West showed his ass on this album. There isn't one bad song on the album and the production is probably some of the best work he's done in the studio with people like John Brion, Mike Dean, RZA, Swizz Beatz, etc. He exploded onto the scene with tracks like Power and Monster, and then proceeded to show a different side of hip hop with Runaway and Devil in a New Dress. Those are just the albums we heard before purchase. The best track on the album is undeniably All of the Lights as along as its proceeded with the All of the Lights Interlude with Elton John. Album is a must buy!

Top 10 of 2010 [Mixtape Edition]: #2 Fashawn " Ode to Illmatic "

How many artists do Ode's in Hip hop.  Of the ones that have been done, how many of them are good?  Who cares!  This one is undebatebly the best.  Fashawn is obviously a child of Illmatic.  This is the equivalent of a great remake but from a different perspective.  It still harbors the same feel and sound of what Nas did with illmatic.  Fashawn was able to create an mixtape that sounds like Illmatic but its content is developed from the west coast point of view.  Not only that, its a lyrical masterpiece.

Top 10 of 2010 [ Soul Edition]: #2 Corinne Bailey Rae " The Sea "

In my mind, I have long walks through the park holding hands with Ms. Bailey Rae as she whispers "Like a Star" in ear.  But that'll never happens, so The Sea in my headphones the best I can do, and its all I really need.  This album is the follow up to her Self-Title LP which was release while her husband was alive.  The death of her husband seemed to bring Corinne's music career to a screeching halt and fans like myself weren't sure of her return.  The Sea brought about a darker Corinne who still seemed to me morning the death of her love, but it also shown an enjoyment and love for the music that's allowed her to make it through those hard times.  I don't think there's any LP released this year that is similar to the mood or feel of this album.

Top 10 of 2010 [Rap Edition]: #3 The Roots " How I Got Over "

Waiting for a Roots album is like waiting for a paycheck with 3 bonuses!  How I got over was a huge payday in Hip Hop this year.  The album is flawless from start to finish.  More artists need to put more thought into who they feature on their albums like The Roots did with H.I.G.O.  Its even been debated amoungst fanatics of the hip hop community that Blu & Phonte may have dropped better verses than BlackThought on some of the songs.  That is completely open to interpretation.  The popularity of Doing it Again Remix and The Fire only added to the anticipation of a classic The Roots & John Legend collab project with Wake Up!.

Top 10 of 2010 [Mixtape Edition]: #3 @Add2theMC " Tale Of Two's City, Vol. 4: Better Days "

Add-2 is easily one of the illest lyricists out.  I really wish he'd get enough notice to make the Freshmen Class 2011 list.  This guy never ceases to amaze me with the way he puts bars together and the actual content which perfectly fits the production laced on this mixtape.  This mixtape is one of those SHOULD'VE BEEN AN LP, types.  I would have paid full price twice for this.  His track Cassette Tapes is one of my top 10 tracks of 2010.  Rarely do you have a song that you can wholeheartedly relate with, that just touches on every emotion you feel in this life.  He currently is features on Super Genius from the Actual Proof Talented Tenth mixtape and displays no slackluster what so ever.  Definitely a mixtape that needs to be in rotation for real hip hop heads.

Top 10 of 2010 [ Soul Edition]: #3 The Black Keys " Brothers "

Who are the Black Keys.  Uhhh... ---> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Black_Keys   Do your research please.  We at WM40A don't have time to do that for you.. Wait, don't we already do that?  Anyway, the Black Keys have had they're hand in the rap game for a while now thanks to Dame Dash and the past released Blakroc album.  With this album we get a more mellow blues rock feel from the Brothers!  Songs like Tighten Up have even been Grammy Nominated.  It's a real mellow album that is extremely underrated, but does still have  a nice sized following of dedicated fans.

Top 10 of 2010 [Rap Edition]: #4 Eminem " Recovery "

How many of ya'll brought Relapse?  There's a child in Ethiopia who could have fed his whole family for 5 years with that money you wasted because 3 AM was such a convincingly hot track.  Well, even Em said the album was wack.  Don't get in the studio during rehab, that's what he learned.  And he came back with probably the highest selling album of the year.  Em really switched up his style with songs like Cinderella Man, Going through Changes, Love the way you lie, and Space Bound.  But he didn't lose that lyrically display of AWESOME with tracks like Won't Back Down and Seduction.  All in the all, the album was too official for Gold.  3x Platinum, Em did it again!
